Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – Point Loma made an early goal stand-up as they withstood a solid offensive effort from Azusa Pacific.
The Cougars doubled the number of total shots that Point Loma had (12-6) but fell short on the scoreboard in the one goal contest.
Point Loma scored the game only goal in the 14th minute when a Shelby Murphy corner kick found its way across the goal line.
Mayra Almazan gave the Cougars an opportunity to knot the score at 1-1 just before the midpoint of the first half but her shot from 25 yard out was saved by Sea Lions goalie Ariel Oriarte.
In the second half Almazan had another opportunity on a free kick late in the half. The junior's shot from 20 yards away was bobbled but saved by Oriarte. A majority of the play during the final minutes was in the Sea Lions defensive end but Azusa Pacific couldn't find the equalizing goal.
All of Almazan's six shots were on frame.
In the PacWest opener for the Cougars, they also held an edge in corner kicks 5-2.
