Cougars Fall In PacWest Final

SURPRISE, Ariz.-- Hawai'i Pacific clinched its second consecutive Pacific West Conference tournament championship with a 5-0 win over Azusa Pacific Saturday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club. The No. 3 ranked Sea Warriors took a 3-0 lead in doubles, and used a pair of decisive wins in singles to enter the NCAA tournament with a perfect 19-0 record after blowing through the PacWest tournament with three 5-0 wins.

HPU rattled off two quick wins in doubles, posting an 8-1 win from Adriano Locorotondo and Yann Renault at No. 3 against Pascal Engel and Alan Leahy, before Jaume Martinez-Vich and Mattis Wetzel put the Sea Warriors ahead 2-0 with an 8-2 victory at No. 2. At No. 1 doubles the Sea Warriors broke Gary Yam and Jan Meyer in the first game, and Azusa Pacific (19-5) couldn't break back, falling 8-6 to Petr Michnev and Thibaud Berland. 

The Sea Warriors continued to put it on the Cougars in singles, with Clemens Graute putting HPU within a win with his 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 against Tomas Aranguiz. The reigning PacWest tournament champions then sealed the sweep with Mattis Wetzel's 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Leahy at No. 4. 

Petr Michnev, the PacWest tournament MVP, was tied at a set apiece (6-0, 5-7) with Meyer at No. 1, while Frederik Wilkens led 6-3, 3-4 on court two when the match was clinched. 

Azusa Pacific closes the regular season with a 19-6 record, and will compete in the National Christian College Athletics Association championship tournament in Mobile, Ala., beginning May 6.
