Tale of Two Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AZUSA, Calif. – It was a tale of two very different games as Point Loma and Azusa Pacific split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The high scoring first game went to the Sea Lions but the home squad road a solid pitching effort to earn the split in the second game. Azusa Pacific won the four-game PacWest set to up their record to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in league games. Point Loma moves to 13-6 and 1-3 respectively. 

Game One – Point Loma 14, Azusa Pacific 10

A total of 13 pitchers and 26 position players were used by both teams in nearly four-hour back-and-forth contest. The lead changed hands on four occasions, including twice in the late innings, before the Sea Lions pulled out the victory. 

Point Loma scored the game's first run in the third inning but the Cougars responded with three runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a two-run homerun by Ryan Santana. The Azusa Pacific two-run advantage didn't last long as the Sea Lions scored four runs in the fifth inning then three more in six inning. After six frames, the visitors held an 8-4 lead.

A furious rally by the Cougars put the home team in position to claim the win. Joe Huthsing cut the Azusa Pacific deficit in half with a two-run opposite field homerun over the leftfield wall in the seventh inning. After Jonny Reid held Point Loma scoreless in the eighth inning Azusa Pacific took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. 

After knocking around Sea Lion reliever Alex Leal for three earned runs to pull within one run. Point Loma went to PacWest saves leader Coleman Huntley III to nail down the win. Huntley couldn't wiggle out of the jam as a relentless Cougar offense tied the score at 10-10 when pinch runner Cam Bennett scored on a fielder's choice groundout. The go ahead hit came when Huthsing flicked an opposite field single which scored Santana. Azusa Pacific made the score 10-8 when Tovalin scored on a wild pitch.

Unfortunately Azusa Pacific couldn't hold onto their two-run lead. Point Loma put the first two runners on base and kept their offense flowing. The game tying run came off a fielding error then after a pitching change the Sea Lions scored the game winning run when the next batter, A.J. Derr, singled home Tyler Baker. Before the inning was over the Cougars used three pitchers as the Sea Lions scored six times on five hits while taking advantage of two errors. In the inning the Sea Lions send 11 batters to the plate. 

Azusa Pacific was able to get two singles in the bottom half of the final inning but couldn't get the tying run to the plate. 

Santana led an 11-hit effort for the Cougars by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Jordan Brower and Huthsing each had two base knocks. 

Point Loma recorded 14 hits paced by Anthony Torres' 4-for-6 performance. 

Game Two – Azusa Pacific 5, Point Loma 2

After four innings the pitchers controlled the game as Cougars starter Mike Fairchild allowed just two hits and struck out four while his counterpart, Trevor Abshire, struck out six with two hits. 

The Cougars had the game's first threat in the fifth inning. Brian Magana reached via and error then Mitch Dergazarian moved him along to third base with a single to right field. With two-out Jordan Brower doubled into the right field corner to score Magana and put Dergazarian into scoring position. Point Loma intentionally walked Ryan Santana to load the bases. Michael Staudinger was sent to the plate as a pinch hitter and after working the count to 3-2, Abshire was able to get the strikeout. 

Azusa Pacific added their second run when Adrian Tovalin placed an opposite single between the right fielder, first baseman and second baseman which scored Joe Hutshing; who started the inning with a double. On the play Tovalin advanced to third base on a pair of errors by Sea Lion rightfielder Devin Carter. The Cougars continued to pile on the runs in the inning. The four-run stanza was capped off by a double to deep center by Brower which made the score 5-0. 

Devin Carter hit a solo homerun with one-out in the seventh inning to break the shutout. After back-to-back base hits Billy Sanford got into a bit of trouble but came out of the bullpen to record the final outs and earn the save. 

Fairchild went 6.1 innings where he struck out six and allowed seven hits to up his record to 2-0. Sanford's save is his seconds of the season.

Brower was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. His two doubles gave him a season total of 14. Tovalin also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 effort.
