Seeing Double

SAN DIEGO, Calif.-- The No. 11 ranked Azusa Pacific men's tennis team dropped its third match of the season, falling to No. 5 ranked Hawai'i Pacific 7-2 in San Diego on Friday. The Cougars, who faced a 3-0 deficit after doubles, took two singles matches against one of the favorites to win the NCAA Division II title.

Frederik Wilkens won his 11th straight match with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Thibaud Berland at No. 2, improving the senior's record to 11-2 on the season. Pascal Engel, who clinched the Cougars' victory against Emory (Ga.) on Wednesday, recorded a three-set win at No. 4, beating Mattis Wetzel 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. 

No. 2 ranked Petr Michnev defeated No. 7 ranked Jan Meyer 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 1, while No. 6 ranked Jaume Martinez posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Alan Leahy at No. 3. Yann Renault beat Tomas Aranguiz 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, and Gary Yam fell to Adriano Locorotondo 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. 

The Sea Warriors (11-0) took all three doubles matches by a score of 8-4, giving the Cougars their third loss of the season against a team ranked in the top-15 of NCAA Division II. 

Azusa Pacific will return to action next Thursday with a home tilt against Amherst before facing Holy Names next Saturday at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
