SAN DIEGO, Calif.-- For the second straight time, the Azusa Pacific men's tennis team rallied for a narrow 5-4 win, this time defeating Point Loma in San Diego on Friday evening thanks to a familiar recipe.

After the Sea Lions went ahead 2-1 in doubles, the Cougars responded with four singles win, getting the clinching victory from Gary Yam at No. 4 to improve their record to 2-0 on the season. Yam, who's made a name for himself as Azusa Pacific's closer over the past two seasons, lived up to his 'Yam-time' moniker. Despite dropping the first set 6-3, the junior rattled off consecutive 6-3 wins to seal a three-set victory over Kaptan Kaster, and give the Cougars their 26th consecutive regular season win .Â
The other three Azusa Pacific wins came from Pascal Engel, Jan Meyer, and Tomas Aranguiz. At No. 2 Meyer registered a come from behind win to keep the Cougars alive, defeating Michael Zablan 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Engel tabbed a 6-4, 6-0 sweep of Daniel Milliken at No. 5, while Aranguiz rolled in a 6-0, 6-1 win against Kevin McKelligan at No. 5.
Point Loma's two singles wins came at No. 1 and No. 3, with Martin Blaho defeating Frederik Wilkens 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Brooks Baldinger beating Alan Leahy 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play Point Loma took a 2-1 lead. Yam and Leahy notched Azusa Pacific's lone doubles win with a swift 8-0 win at No. 3 over Milliken and McKelligan. The Sea Lions, however, evened the score at 1-1 with an 8-2 win over Meyer and Engel at No. 1, before Wilkens and Aranguiz suffered an 8-5 loss at No. 2.Â
The Cougars will continue play tomorrow at UC San Diego before returning home for a tilt against former Golden State Athletic Conference rival Concordia on Monday.
