Azusa Pacific Gets Artistic Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO – A strong day at the plate by a multitude of players led the Cougars to a doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art on Saturday.

During the two games, the Cougars recorded 29 hits as they scored at least 10 runs in each contest in improving their record to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in PacWest play.

Game One – Azusa Pacific 11, Academy of Art 1

The Cougar bats were alive in the opening game win by banging out 17 hits as six different players recorded multi-hit efforts.

Adrian Tovalin continued his hot streak by going 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs and scoring once. Ryan Santana also put together a three-hit performance. He also crossed the plate three times. Jordan Brower had a 2-for-4 game with two RBIs and two runs scored. It is the ninth time this season that Brower has recorded multiple hits in one game.

Azusa Pacific started hot and never looked back. They scored three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run triple by Tovalin that scored Santana and Brower. Prior to that base knock, Brower started the scoring with an RBI single that scored Mitch Dergarazian. The Cougars built on a 3-1 lead in the second inning when and RBI single by Dergazarian plated Austin Shives.

The strong offensive effort continued in the third and fourth innings. During the third stanza the Cougars scored twice on three hits then crossed the plate five times in the fourth inning. After the inning, Azusa Pacific held an 11-1 lead. During those first four innings, the Cougars had 13 of their 17 hits.

Azusa Pacific made the huge lead stand-up as the bullpen allowed four hits during their three innings of work. Cougar starting pitcher Wyatt Wood went 6.0 innings and allow just one hit while striking out seven to get the victory.

Game Two – Azusa Pacific 10, Academy of Art 3

Another strong offensive effort paced the doubleheader sweep for Azusa Pacific.

For the fourth straight game and the eighth time in the last nine games, the Cougars recorded at least 10 hits.

Daniel Martin extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 3-for-3 contest. He also scored three times and drove in two additional runs.

After falling behind 3-2 after two innings, the Cougars tied the score on Pablo O'Connor RBI single that scored Martin from third base. Azusa Pacific busted the game open with a four-run, five-hit fourth inning as they sent nine batters to plate.

The score remained 7-3 until the sixth inning when the Cougars put any hopes of an Urban Knight comeback to the way side.  Azusa Pacific took advantage of sloppy play from Academy of Art by scoring three times as Blake James, Jordan Brower and Ryan Santana each scored unearned runs. With the Cougars holding a 10-3 lead all that was left for the Cougars to do was get the final six outs of the seven-inning contest.

Academy of Art was only able to muster one baserunner in the closing innings as the Cougars took three of four in the four-game PacWest series.
