Thrilling Finish to Season

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. It was only fitting that it took nearly all game for Azusa Pacific to find the back of the net.

The Cougars poured on shot-after-shot but couldn't break through until there was less than one minute remaining to post a 1-0 win over Fresno Pacific on Thursday evening.

In their final game of the season Azusa Pacific took 33 total shots but it was until that final shot was taken could they finally claim the win. Katelyn Rogers scored with 38 seconds left in the contest off a feed from Alyx Williams for the game winner.

The victory gave the Cougars 10 wins for the 18th consecutive season. It was the final game in a Cougars uniform for Logan Chan, Amanda Hardy, Shannon Hardy and Williams.

"The girls worked hard tonight," said head coach Jason Surrell. "There's a pride in what the team does. They have a mentality of winning. I credit them for continually fighting for that winning goal this evening."

"I saw the opportunity and just wanted to take advantage of it," Rogers said. "It's great to send the seniors off with a victory. They have been such a great influence and it's great to send them off on a win."

The opening 45 minutes saw the Cougars (10-7-1, 8-3-1 PacWest) hold a 14-2 edge in overall shots but of the 16 total shots between the two teams, only three were put on frame. A majority of the action was spent in the midfield as each team looked to create scoring chances.

Amanda Hardy had a solid opportunity off a corner kick that was headed away from the goal's mouth by a Sunbird defender in the 43rd minute.

Jerrica Babb had the best early opportunity in the second half from Fresno Pacific (6-7-2, 6-3-2). Babb made a great run down the left side of the field but her shot from 15 yards was saved by Sarah Klinkenberg.  Fresno Pacific put together another good shot on goal in the 61st minute but Klinkenberg was up to the challenge again by saving Hannah Farazman's attempt.

Just a few minutes later Amanda Hardy headed a cross from Mayra Almazan on goal but Vanessa Escobar came-up with a nice diving save. Almazan created another good chance in the 78th minute but her left footed attempt went into the waiting arms of Escobar.

A wild sequence of events came in the 85th minute when Lindsey Ryals shot from 25 yards hit the cross bar. The rebound settled right to Haley Fisher but her attempt from in-close at point blank range went over the cross bar.

Minutes later Rogers put home the game-winner. The Sunbirds had on final chance when Ana Walker took a shot at the top of the box but Kinkenberg sealed the win with a nice save.

After a rough start to the season when Azusa Pacific was 2-6 after eight games, they rallied to post an 8-1-1 finish over the last 10 contests.

"We had as tough a schedule as anyone in the country," Surrell said. "We weren't clicking early in the season and that was tough. But we pulled it together. The way we finished the season; it is a great feat for this team and I couldn't be prouder. This group stayed together through it all."
