Back Into the Winners Circle

Box Score AZUSA, Calif. – Back on the winning side.

Despite having their season long five-game winning streak snapped in their last contest, the Cougars put themselves right back into the win column with a 3-0 victory over Academy of Art on Thursday evening.

It is the eighth time in 2014 Azusa Pacific (8-7-1, 6-3-1 PacWest) has recorded a shutout.

"Defensively we weren't allowing them into the back line. Start to finish I thought we played good defense," said head coach Jason Surrell. "We hit a little bit a lull offensively to start the second half despite our best attempts but we continued to work the ball and create opportunities and I was pleased with that."

The Cougars put their first goal on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when Alyx Williams scored from in-close off a nice feed from Amanda Hardy.

With just over 10 minutes left in the first half the Cougars added to the their lead when Darby Emmons put to the ball past Urban Knight goal keeper Rachael Rempe from 10 yards out. Haley Fisher provided the assist on the play.

The best chance for the Urban Knights (2-12-1, 2-7) in the first half came when Kendall Halliburton hit a shot from just outside the box on frame but Kristin Wilson made the save comfortably.

Mayra Almazan nearly gave the Cougars a three-goal edge but her free kick in the 50th minute was saved by Rempe. Just two minutes the situation nearly mirrored itself but this time Almazan's blast came during live action. Over the next several minutes the Cougars continued to pepper Rempe with shots but the senior was up to the task as the score remained 2-0.

Azusa Pacific got their final goal of the game when Haley Fisher booted a ball into the back of cage off a nice feed from Haley Williamson in the 81st minute.

Wilson only had to make one save in recording her first collegiate win as the Cougars goalkeeper.

It is the 13th game this season in which the Cougars recorded a shutout or were shutout.

Should Azusa Pacific win their final two games, they will continue a streak starting with the 1997 season in which the program has recorded at least 10 wins in a season.
