Records Fall in First Dual Meets of 2014

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The swimming and diving team made the long flight to the final frontier to compete in two duals meets against Alaska on Friday and Saturday evening.

The Cougars came out on the short end of both dual meets by the identical scores of 117-88 each evening. The weekend also marked the opening weekend of PCSC (Pacific Coast Swimming Conference) competition.

"We competed well against a really good NCAA Division II opponent," said head coach Tim Kyle. "I was pleased with how we competed, especially after the travel, on back-to-back days. We have the wheels turning in the right direction."

While the Cougars didn't come out on top in either dual meet, there were records broken and first place finishes to note.

Rosalee Mira Santa Ana broke the pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle race on Friday evening. The freshman touched the wall in 10:18.41 to break the six-year mark set by former national champion Erin Dolan of Drury. That mark also set the school record by 23 seconds. In addition, she won the race by almost 60 seconds. That same night she set another pool record when she swam the 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.04 which set the pool mark by over five seconds (5:06.98 – Alaska's Kathryn Pound in 2013).

The freshman also won the 1650-yard freestyle event in 17:35.26 to go a perfect 3-for-3 in individual races.

Ingrid Cardenas also posted a first place finish during the weekend with a win in the 200-yard freestyle completion. In a tightly contested race, she out-touched Margot Adams 1:57.15 to 1:58.43.

On Saturday evening the 800-yard relay team of Cardenas, Heidi Zuniga, Quinn Robertson and Santa Ana won the event with a time of 7:56.42.

The squad takes two weeks off from competition before they host Biola at Slauson Pool near campus. The home event starts at 10 a.m.
