AZUSA, Calif.-- The No. 11 ranked Azusa Pacific men's tennis team continued to roll, winning its 19th consecutive match with an 8-1 drubbing of Point Loma on Friday. The Cougars swept doubles, and took the first five singles contests before the Sea Lions logged their lone win in the final match of the afternoon.
The Cougars won a pair of super-breakers, with
Jan Meyer keeping his perfect mark alive with a 10-8 (6-2, 1-6) win over Jakob Kevelaerts in the breaker to improve to 18-0 in his first collegiate season.
Ben Eger also logged his 18th win of the season, defeating Bram Kevelaerts 10-8 after splitting the first two sets 6-4, 6-7.Â
11th ranked
Jochem Hoefnagels posted the first singles win of the afternoon, beating Brooks Baldinger 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1.
Frederik Wilkens clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Michael Zablan at No. 2.
Gary Yam improved to 15-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Kaptan Kaster.
In doubles
Whitman Hough and Wilkens kicked the day off with an 8-2 win over Kaster and Zablan, while Hoefnagels and Meyer beat Baldinger and J. Kevelaerts 8-5. Yam and Eger closed doubles with an 8-2 defeat of B. Kevelaerts and Daniel Milliken.
The Cougars, who are chasing the 2004 team for the best start in program history (23-0) will close out the regular season with a Saturday morning match against BYU-Hawaii and a Monday afternoon affair against Biola.
