HONOLULU, Hawai'i-- In the opening match of the 2013 Pacific West Conference men's championship tournament, 11th ranked Azusa Pacific moved to within one of matching the program's best-ever start with a 5-0 sweep of Hawai'i Hilo for its 22nd consecutive victory. The Cougars, who are the No. 2 seed, swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead on the seventh-seeded Vulcans, and got wins from Ben Eger and Whitman Hough to clinch the 5-0 win with the Cougars leading on three of the other four courts.

With a 3-0 edge Eger beat Prycen Haas 6-0, 6-2 before Hough registered a 6-2, 6-0 win against Makoa Rosa at No. 5. Eger notched his 20th win, tied for the team lead, while Hough reached the 10-win plateau for the first time in his career.

In doubles Jochem Hoefnagels and Jan Meyer beat Tom Greer Smith and Kainoa Rosa 8-6, while Hough and Frederik Wilkens recorded an 8-2 victory over Spencer Travalino and Rosa at No. 2. Eger and Gary Yam nabbed an 8-1 victory against Michael Davis and Haas at No. 3.

Hoefnagels was leading Greer Smith 6-1 when the match was called, while Meyer was en route to recording his 21st straight win before having to stop with a 6-1 lead. Yam also led 6-1 against Davis.

With the win Azusa Pacific moves on to face the No. 3 seed, Fresno Pacific, for the third time this year. The Cougars took down the Sunbirds 5-4 in both of the meetings this season.
