AZUSA, Calif. -- A narrow No. 3 doubles win completed a doubles sweep for the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific, which rolled to a 7-2 win over NCAA Div. III's No. 10-ranked Washington University St. Louis (Mo.) Monday afternoon.

Janosch Apelt and Jochem Hoefnagels made quick work of their No. 1 doubles matchup with Adam Putterman and Ross Putterman, winning 8-3 after winning six of the first seven sets of the match.  Freddy Wilkens and Gary Yam were right behind, finishing off an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win shortly thereafter, setting up Ben Eger and Ilja Ikonnikov for the doubles sweep when the pair pulled out a 7-5 tiebreaker win.

Eger and Ikonnikov jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak, with Eger successfully holding each of his last three points in the set, including a match-point first serve that was returned into the net.

With the doubles sweep and 3-0 lead in hand heading into singles play, Azusa Pacific registered opening-set wins in all six singles matches, with Hoefnagels winning his 10th straight singles match at No. 2 when his opponent retired from the match with an arm injury suffered during the third game of the second set, with Hoefnagels leading 6-1, 2-0.

The Cougars' match victory was sealed with Ikonnikov's 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot, and Eger extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.

Apelt claimed his opening set at No. 1 singles in a 7-5 tiebreaker, but he retired midway through the second set, allowing Adam Putterman to register Washington's first point of the match.  At No. 3, Gary Parizher edged Wilkens in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-5, after he and Wilkens had split the first two sets of the match.  Wilkens won the opening set, 6-1, before Parizher answered with a 6-3 second-set victory.  Theirs was the only match decided in three sets, as Yam notched his sixth consecutive singles victory with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 6.

With the win, Azusa Pacific has won six consecutive matches, improving to 9-1 overall, while Washington drops to 4-3 on the season.
