Box Score ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- With 30 seconds left in regulation, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific had unleashed a barrage of 55 shots in nearly 2 full games of soccer, with just a single goal and an upset loss to show for it.
Senior forward Theresa Broad salvaged the weekend when she scored in the final minute of regulation to lift the Cougars to a 2-1 win at the University of Mobile (Ala.) Soccer Classic over unranked tournament host Mobile.
Just 24 hours after out-shooting No. 6-ranked William Carey (Miss.) by a 24-3 margin in a 1-0 loss, Azusa Pacific posted an overwhelming 32-5 advantage over Mobile. Broad broke a scoreless tie with a 61st-minute goal assisted by freshman Rachael Harding, but Mobile's Lady Rams countered with the equalizer less than 15 minutes later when Terri McCreadie's header found the back of the net.
Senior midfielder Brittany Lane assisted Broad's game-winner, getting the ball to Broad, who sidestepped Mobile goalkeeper Anna Maddox and deposited the ball into the net for the victory.
Maddox made 12 saves on the Cougars' 14 shots on goal. She accounted for 4 saves against Broad, who pulled the trigger for 7 shots, 6 of which were on goal. In the second half alone, Azusa Pacific registered 22 shots while limiting Mobile to just a single shot that was converted for the equalizer.
Three of Azusa Pacific's non-conference games have been decided by a single goal, and in those contests the Cougars outshot their opponents by a combined 72-17 margin. However, just 2 Azusa Pacific shots found paydirt, both in Saturday's win over Mobile, and both Cougar losses have been 1-0 defeats.
Saturday's win lifts Azusa Pacific to a 5-2 overall record as it concludes non-conference action. The Cougars, who posted a Sept. 21 1-0 road win over Vanguard in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener, return to GSAC play on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a 3:30 p.m. home game against Hope International.
