Cougars Blank Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Junior Danny Colten played the top singles spot, and his 3-set victory helped put the finishing touches on Azusa Pacific’s perfect 9-0 sweep over Biola Tuesday afternoon.

Colten posted a perfect 6-0 opening set, then dropped the second set before completing the No. 1 singles victory with a 10-5 super tiebreaker win.

Freshmen Ilja Ikonnikov and Whitman Hough posted perfect 6-0, 6-0 singles wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Ikonnikov teamed with Eric Isaacson for an 8-5 No. 2 doubles win, and Hough was also an 8-5 winner at No. 1 doubles with freshman Jack Zapala.

With the win, Azusa Pacific’s second straight GSAC victory by a 9-0 margin, the Cougars improve to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in GSAC play. Biola’s defeat extends the Eagles’ losing streak to 7 matches, and they drop to 1-10 overall, 0-8 GSAC. The Cougars will host the top 2 ranked programs in NCAA Division III before wrapping up the first half of the 16-match GSAC schedule Saturday at Concordia. Top-ranked Emory (Ga.) visits the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex Thursday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m., preceding Friday’s 2 p.m. visit from No. 2-ranked Washington (Mo.).
