Box Score FRESNO, Calif. -- Freshman midfielder Molly Lavin became the eighth different player to register a game-winning score, tallying the only goal in Azusa Pacific's 1-0 road win over Fresno Pacific to close out the regular season Tuesday night.
Lavin found the upper left corner of the net in the 58th minute for her second goal of the year, and fellow freshman Jacqueline Conforto was credited with the assist. Her score came after the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Cougars took 3 shots and had 4 corner kicks in just the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Lavin took a game-high 4 of Azusa Pacific's 18 shots, and another standout performance from the Cougar defense allowed the single score to hold up. Fresno Pacific managed just 5 total shots in the game, the tenth time this season Azusa Pacific has allowed 5 or fewer shots. Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Wieland stopped the Sunbirds' only shot on goal, giving her and her starting back four of Katie Rorabaugh, Tiffany Makinster, Rachael Harding and Delina Papa their ninth shutout of the year and their sixth in the past 9 games. The Cougars, who clinched the program's fifth consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference title last Saturday, blanked 7 of their 10 conference foes.
With the win, Azusa Pacific wraps up the regular season with a 13-3 overall record while finishing 9-1 in GSAC play. The Cougars have won at least 9 GSAC games in 7 of the past 9 seasons. Fresno Pacific drops to 9-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 GSAC with 1 game remaining.
The rest of the GSAC concludes the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 31), while the Cougars will be off for their scheduled conference bye. The GSAC Postseason Tournament begins Tuesday, Nov. 3, to determine the GSAC's automatic qualifier to the 2009 NAIA Women's Soccer Championship. By virtue of winning the GSAC regular-season title, Azusa Pacific secured the top seed and home-field advantage throughout the conference tournament.
