Cougars Clinch The Crown

Box Score

AZUSA, Calif. -- The NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific fired off 46 shots and clinched its fifth consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference women's soccer championship with Saturday's 6-0 win over San Diego Christian.

The Cougars, now 12-3 overall and 8-1 in GSAC play, wrap up the regular season with a Tuesday (Oct. 27) visit to Fresno Pacific, but Vanguard's 2-2 tie at Fresno Pacific Saturday evening eliminated Vanguard (5-1-2 GSAC) from the conference title race.

All 6 goals were scored by different players, and 15 of the 21 Cougars who played in the field registered at least 1 shot. The 46-shot total was Azusa Pacific's highest in a single-game since Oct. 15, 2002, when the Cougars tallied a 46-7 shots margin in a 4-0 road win over Hope International. Azusa Pacific took 18 shots before halftime and 28 in the second half, and the Cougars tallied 20-plus shots for the eighth time this season and recorded their third 30-shot effort of the year.

Senior forward Theresa Broad got the Azusa Pacific offense rolling from the start, taking the first shot just 18 seconds into the contest, but it took the Cougars 7 shots and just over 20 minutes to put a shot on goal. However, once freshman forward Heidi Witschi fired a shot right at San Diego Christian goalkeeper in the 21st minute, it took less than 3 minutes for Witschi to set up freshman forward Natalie Sun for the game's first score.

Sun collected a pass from Witschi at the top of the box and hit a 16-yard drive that bounced off the underside of the crossbar down into the goal to give Azusa Pacific a 1-0 lead just over 24 minutes into the game. Witschi followed just 5 minutes later with an 8-yard finish from the left side to the far post, taking the assist from senior defender Katie Rorabaugh to push the lead to 2-0 in the 30th minute.

It took the Cougars another 22 shots before Rorabaugh broke through for a 68th-minute goal inside the left post, and Azusa Pacific added 3 quick strikes for the final 6-0 margin. Sophomore midfielder Brittany Flanagan, Broad and senior forward Hayley Gustafson each scored in the 5-minute flurry.

The Azusa Pacific defense that surrendered just 4 total shots (2 in each half), and freshman goalkeeper Michelle Wieland stopped San Diego Christian's only shot on goal in the first half. Senior Sammi Sheppard faced just 2 shots in a flawless second half to combine with Wieland for the Cougars' eighth team shutout of the year.

With the win, Azusa Pacific bounces back from its first GSAC defeat of the year and improves to 12-3 overall, 8-1 GSAC. San Diego Christian remains winless (0-8) in conference play and drops to 3-11-2 overall.
