Cougars Take Three More

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Chelsea Morgan helped Azusa Pacific pick up where it left off after its season-opening win over Southern Oregon, leading the the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Cougars sweep two more opponents and wrap up the weekend with a 4-game win over Lubbock Christian to claim third place at the 23rd Annual Fresno Pacific Invitational. Morgan was named to the all-tournament team after tallying 55 kills with a .474 attack percentage. She moved into sixth on the Cougar career kills chart with a career tally of 903 kills, and now sits 111 kills shy of fifth on the list.

Other top tournament performers for Azusa Pacific included junior Brianne Huff and freshman Jill Baker. Huff, who opened the season with a new career-high kill total (16 vs. Southern Oregon), set a new personal mark with 17 kills in the Cougars' victory over Lubbock Christian and finished the tournament with a team-high 59 kills. Baker needed just 1 more dig in a quick sweep of Holy Names to post double-doubles in kills and digs in all 4 matches. Baker finished the weekend as Azusa Pacific's digs leader with 56, collecting 18 digs in wins over Southern Oregon and Lubbock Christian. Baker's best offensive performance was a 16-kill effort in a sweep of Notre Dame de Namur Saturday morning.

Following Friday's opening sweep over Southern Oregon, Baker led a balanced attack in Azusa Pacific's 30-25, 30-15, 30-16 sweep over Holy Names. Baker posted 14 kills and 9 digs, Huff tallied 11 kills and a career-high 5 blocks and sophomore Megan Burch collected 10 kills. Sophomores Brittany Brown and Allison Kincheloe each served 4 aces in the victory.

Baker and Huff again led the way in another Cougar sweep, this time a 30-20, 30-19, 30-23 win over Notre Dame de Namur. Baker registered 16 kills, 11 digs and 3 blocks, and Huff added 15 kills. Morgan added 9 kills, 3 aces and 5 blocks.

In Azusa Pacific's tournament finale, a 30-24, 30-23, 28-30, 30-26 win over Lubbock Christian, five different Cougars finished with double-digit kill totals, led by Morgan's 21-kill effort. Huff finished with 17 kills, Baker added 13 kills and 18 digs and Burch collected 11 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Knudsen tallied career-highs with 12 kills and 6 blocks in the win.

Brown, junior Alison Pattison and sophomore Laura Stiles came off the bench to provide solid defense, accounting for 125 digs as a trio. Kincheloe's 206 assists vaulted her into fourth on the Cougars career assists chart with 1,992, and she needs just 400 more to move into third all-time.

Azusa Pacific's 4-0 record marks the first such season-opening winning streak since the 2002 squad opened the season with 5 straight victories. The Cougars return to action Sept. 5 when they visit San Diego Christian to open Golden State Athletic Conference action.
