Longball Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif.. –- The NAIA's No. 1-ranked California Baptist used the long ball to first crush the Cougars, and then used it again to break their heart as the Lancers swept a GSAC doubleheader from Azusa Pacific, 8-0 and 1-0.

All 9 Lancer runs on the day came as a result of the long ball. The Lancers launched 3 of them in the first game, including a third-inning grand slam by Nikki Lowe that put CBU up 5-0 at the time. Lowe's seventh home run of the season brought Cougar ace Kris Franks out of the bullpen, and she settled the uprising – for the time being. In the sixth, Franks tired, and Lancer first baseman Genie Jenkins took advantage, crushing a 1-out, 3-run bomb to put an immediate end to the game.

Even before Jenkins' game-ending home run, the Cougars were not likely to make a comeback. All-GSAC pitcher Candice Thomas was sharp, near perfect sharp. Jessica Mikesell's fourth-inning single to left-center with 2 outs in the fourth inning produced the Cougars' only base runner of the game. Thomas retired 18 of the 19 Cougars she faced, striking out 5 while improving to 22-1 on the season.

In the nightcap, Cougar freshman pitcher Camille Hundley fired the finest game of her young career, limiting the powerful Lancer bats to just 3 hits. However, Tami Trujillo led off the sixth inning with her sixth home run of the season for the game's only run. As a result, Sarah Sherman out-dueled Hundley, holding the Cougars to 3 hits while striking out 9, working 6 innings before giving way to Thomas, who pitched a perfect seventh inning to pick up her second save of the season.

The Cougars threatened a couple of times, first loading the bases with 2 outs in the first inning, and then getting Lori Shimasaki, who led off the third with a single, to second base. Sherman, though, came up the big outs each time to keep Azusa Pacific off the scoreboard.

With the sweep, Cal Baptist improves to 39-2 overall, 14-2 in the GSAC. Azusa Pacific falls to 17-14 overall, 4-10 in the GSAC. The Cougars take a break from GSAC play next week and travel to Hawaii for 6 games.
