SAN DIEGO, Calif. –- The March and April rains in Southern California forced Azusa Pacific head coach Lori Kwiatkowski to go find some extra work for her team. So as a late season add to the schedule, she picked up a single game with NCAA Division III Redlands and got all the work she needed.
Azusa Pacific used a 5-run third inning to rally from a 3-run deficit and knock off Redlands, 6-3, this afternoon in Azusa.
The Cougars sent 10 players to the plate in the third inning, collecting 8 hits while taking advantage of a pair of Bulldog errors to push across 5 runs. Senior third baseman Rachel Yoshizu's double off the left-field wall cleared the bases and put the Cougars up 4-3. Yoshizu then came home on Tami Carter's single up the middle to cap the inning.
That was all pitcher Michelle Coleman needed to pick up her seventh win in 9 decisions this season. The senior struggled at the outset of the game, yielding a pair of first-inning runs off 3 hits, including back-to-back doubles by Kolbi Sprague and Martiza Padilla. The Bulldogs added another run in the second inning and appeared to go up 4-0 on Megan Cooley's sacrifice fly to right. However, AnnMarie Lozano was called out for leaving third base too soon on the fly, leaving the score at 3-0 in favor of Redlands.
From then on Coleman was sharp, allowing just 2 infield singles over the final 5 innings of work to collect her seventh complete-game effort of the season and allow Azusa Pacific to rally for the victory.
Azusa Pacific added an insurance run in the sixth when with 1 out Justine Barnett laced a triple down the right field line and to the wall. She then trotted home on Jessica Mikesell's single up the middle.
Eight of the 9 Cougars who started got a hit. Carter pushed her hitting streak to 6 straight by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Mikesell and Barnett were also 2-for-3 as Azusa Pacific pounded out 11 hits.
With the victory, Azusa Pacific improves to 24-20 on the season, while Redlands, which is currently in first place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, falls to 26-10.
