Cougars Take 2-of-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-- Azusa Pacific pounded out 45 hits and scored 34 runs as the Cougars took 2-of-3 games from Westmont in a 3-game GSAC baseball series in Santa Barbara over the weekend.

The Cougars took the first 2 games, 14-1 on Friday, and 14-3 in the first of 2 games Saturday. Westmont won the 7-inning nightcap, 7-6.

The Cougars are now 17-21 overall, 12-12 GSAC. Westmont falls to 5-31, 2-22.

In the opener on Friday, the Cougars got 6 strong innings from starter Jason Ray, who allowed 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 5 to pick up the win. He got more than enough support from the bats, which delivered 18 hits and a big 7-run third to blow open a 1-1 game.

Jeff Staniland, who was 3-for-6, started things off with an RBI double to right center with 2-on and nobody out. Stephen Vogt was then intentionally walked to load the bases, and the Cougars followed with 3 straight run-scoring hits. Joe Morrison singled to left to drive in a pair. Scott Hodsdon then singled in a run, and Coba Canales cleared the bases with a 2-RBI triple to right center. James O'Neill then capped the scoring with a 1-out single to drive in Canales.

Vogt finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, a double and a triple. Morrison and Hodsdon also had 3 hits apiece, and Morrison collected 4 RBIs.

Azusa Pacific picked right up where it left off Friday in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader. The Cougars collected 18 hits, 15 of which were singles, and put the game away with a 9-run second.

Zach Pettikas went 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out 6 to snap his 3-game losing string. Jake Boyle tossed the final 2 innings, allowing 5 hits and a run.

The Cougars sent 13 to the plate and had 9 hits in their 9-run second, 6 of them run-scoring hits. Morrison had 2 hits in the inning, including an RBI triple. Vogt led off with a single and then delivered a sacrifice fly, which scored the Cougars' eighth run of the frame. Hodsdon capped the scoring with an RBI double. Johnny Soberal had a 2-run single, and Canales, Staniland and Chris Cardinale each had RBI singles.

Vogt and Canales each had 3 hits apiece while Vogt finished with 3 RBIs. Jonathan Dravecky, Staniland, Morrison and Hodsdon each had 2 hits. Staniland and Soberal both finished with 2 RBIs.

The Warriors, who had little to celebrate in the first 2 games, ended a 4-year drought to the Cougars by snapping a 14-game losing streak with a 7-6 win in the nightcap. It was their first win over the Cougars since 2001, and it almost didn't happen.

Westmont chased Hodsdon after scoring 4 runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Cougars added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Soberal and another in the fifth on an infield single by Canales to make it 5-3 and chase starter Tyson Bagley. However, the Warriors scored twice in the sixth, taking advantage of a Cougar miscue to score a pair of unearned runs off reliever Kelly Strickland to take a 7-3 lead.

In their last at-bat, though, the Cougars made things interesting. Morrison led off with a single to right, and Canales followed with his first home run of the season to make it 7-5. Hodsdon then grounded out to short before Soberal was hit by a pitch, and O'Neill walked.

Chase Dunning then popped out to short, and Joe Billheimer followed with what appeared to be a bases-clearing, game-tying triple down the right field line. However, the ball went through a hole at the base of the right field fence, allowing only Soberal to score and forcing Billheimer to go back to second with a ground-rule double and O'Neill back to third.

Warrior reliever Ray Crick then ended the threat and the game when he induced Staniland into a groundout to third.

Canales was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Morrison was 2-for-4, and 5 other Cougars registered a hit.
