Box Score POMONA, Calif.-- Cal Poly Pomona scored 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the last 2 coming on Marc Evans' infield single with 2 out, to complete the Broncos' 8-7 come-from-behind non-conference win over Azusa Pacific Tuesday.
With the win, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 18-12 overall and avenges a 6-2 loss to the Cougars back in February. Azusa Pacific suffers its sixth straight loss and falls to 12-13.
The Cougars took a 7-2 lead with 4 runs in the seventh to seemingly take control of the game, but the Broncos fought back with single runs in the seventh and eighth to get within 7-4.
Then in the ninth, Jarrod Allen drew a one out walk before Cougar reliever Buddy McNeill struck out Kevin Falls for the second out. At that point though, McNeill gave up a single to Evan Barnhart and then back-to-back walks to Matt Stevens and Matt Lopez to make it 7-5. Scott Hodsdon then relieved McNeill and gave up an RBI-single to Caleb Allen to bring the Broncos with one.
With the bases still loaded and Lopez running from second and Allen running from first, Evans hit a slow chopper up the middle, beating James O'Neill's throw from short, which enabled Lopez to easily score the winning run.
Chase Dunning had a career day at the plate. In just his second start of his career, the freshman picked up his first career hit, going 2-for-3, and he drove in a career-high 5 RBIs.
Dunning's 2-run single in the first gave the Cougars a quick 2-0 lead, and his sacrifice fly in the sixth gave them a 3-2 lead. He then had a 2-RBI single in the Cougars' 4 run seventh that gave them a 7-2 lead.
Six Cougar pitchers saw action. Brandon Sisk started and tossed 2 scoreless innings. Jake Boyle also hurled a scoreless frame.
Hodsdon and O'Neill both went 2-for-4. Hodsdon also threw 2.2 innings of relief, allowing 1 run. Stephen Vogt was 1-for-3 with a double and a bases loaded walk in the seventh.
