Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- After scoring 50 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Westmont Saturday, it would've been safe to assume Azusa Pacific would be out of offensive production heading into Tuesday's game at The Master's.
It wasn't, but it didn't matter.
Despite scoring 17 runs, Azusa Pacific needed 2 more as The Master's College downed the Cougars 19-17 in the Cougars' season-finale in Santa Clarita. It was the seventh time this year that the Cougars scored at least 15 runs and the 19th time they scored in double-figures.
Nevertheless, the Cougars' season comes to a close at 29-19, just one win shy of the program's 24th 30-win season and first since 2001. They also finish 14-14 in the GSAC and will likely finish sixth—their worst conference finish in program history.
The Cougars played catch-up all day, erasing a pair of early 4-run deficits and a pair of late 3-run deficits, and they used a dramatic a 5-run ninth that turned a 14-12 hole into a 17-14 lead. However, Tommy Barrington hit a walk-off grand slam with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth, just his fourth home run of the year, to lift the Mustangs to the win.
This was nowhere near a pitcher's dual as The Master's struck for 4 runs in the bottom of the first. Joe Morrison finished 3-for-4 with 6 RBIs and hit his fourth bomb of the season, a 3-run shot, to bring the Cougars with in 4-3 in the second. The Mustangs, however, struck for 3 more runs off starter Brad McKinney and opened a 7-3 lead.
In the third, Glenn Hedgpeth hit his league-leading 16th home run of the season, and Morrison tied the game at 7-7 with his second home run in as many innings.
Again though the Mustangs pulled ahead with a 3-run fourth to take a 10-7 advantage. But the Cougars refused to go away, and Ryan Marcos, who had 3 hits on the day, hit a 3-run bomb to cap a 4-run sixth that gave the Cougars their first lead of the day at 11-10. Cameron Radonich also had his lone hit of the day in the sixth, a solo shot—his seventh of the year.
But the lead was short-lived as The Mustangs pushed across 4 runs, 3 unearned, in the seventh off Cougar reliever Josh Grant to take a 14-11 lead. The Cougars took advantage of one of the Mustangs' 5 errors to get a single run in the eighth, and after freshmen hurlers Brandon Sisk and Johnny Soberal combined to hold The Mustangs scoreless in the eighth, the stage was set for the Cougars' final comeback.
Stephen Vogt led off the ninth with his only hit of the day, but it extended his hitting streak to 30 straight games—4 shy of the school record. Robbie Lindsey followed with his school-record 23rd double of the season, and Vogt scored on a Mustang error. Lindsey later scored on Billy Gwinn's RBI single, and the Cougars scored 3 more times—once on an RBI single by Morrison and twice on a 2-RBI single by Jake Haaker to take a 17-14 lead.
Jeremy Hess, who made his first appearance in more than a month last Tuesday came in to try to close the door. He hit Seth Johnson to lead off the inning, but then got the next 2 outs to put the Cougars' within one out of a win. But Hess walked the next batter, gave up an RBI single to Joel Ralston and then walked Stephen Folden to load the bases.
Derek Wohlers relieved Hess and ran Barrington to 0-2, but Barrington battled and got the count to 3-2, then hit the next pitch he saw over the fence for the game-winner.
Lindsey finished 4-for-6 to end his career with 234 hits, second most in school history and just 8 shy of the school record. Billy Gwinn also finished with 2 hits as the Cougars pounded out 19 total hits, their fourth straight game with double-digit hits.
