Getting Offensive

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific did its part, but unfortunately the Cougars got no help. Taking out its frustrations, Azusa Pacific combined for 50 runs and 46 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Westmont today, 31-7 in the opener and 19-2 in the nightcap.

However, Concordia's split with Vanguard today eliminates the Cougars from postseason action for the first time in 23 years, snapping the longest postseason streak of any team in the GSAC.

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 29-18 overall, 14-13 GSAC and has one game left in its quest for a 30-win campaign Tuesday at The Master's. Should the Cougars win that game, they would become the first team in GSAC history to win 30 games and not make the playoffs.

Westmont appeared as if it were ready to snap its 10-game losing skid to the Cougars as Dominick Paluso led off the opener with his 14th home run of the season. Ryan McGill then had an RBI double, and the Warriors led 2-0. The Cougars responded with 8 runs in their first at-bat to take an 8-2 lead and set the tone for the rest of the day.

The Cougars scored in 15 of the 16 innings played in both games and had a trio of 8-run frames. They hit 9 home runs on the day, including a pair from Joe Morrison in the opener. In the Cougars' 8-run sixth in the opener, they hit 4 bombs in the inning as Nate Leiser and Johnny Soberal both hit their first homers of the season. Soberal's came in his first at-bat of the year.

Stephen Vogt, Robbie Lindsey and Morrison each finished with 4 hits. Vogt had 4 RBIs and 4 runs, and Morrison had 3 RBIs and a triple. The Cougars, the GSAC's top hitting team, pounded out 29 hits off 6 different Westmont pitchers. Glen Hedgpeth hit his league-leading 15th home run of the year. Derek Wohlers threw 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs to pick up his fifth win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Cougars blew the game open with an 8-run second to take a 9-0 lead before cruising in for the win. Brandon Sisk provided the pitching as he went 6 solid innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs to pick up his fifth win of the year.

Vogt extended his hitting streak to 29 games with a double in the second and was a perfect 5-for-5 on the day before being lifted.

Lindsey finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles to tie Azusa Pacific's single-season record with his 22nd double of the season.

Cameron Radonich, who was 2-for-4 in the opener, was 2-for-3 with 3 runs and his sixth home run of the season. Billy Gwinn was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and his fourth bomb of the season.

As a team, the Cougars hit 9 home runs and 10 doubles on the day to bring their season total to 124, breaking the program's single-season doubles' record, which was previously 115 set in 1987.
