LEWISTON, Idaho -- And with the extra point, the score is now...

It looked more like a football game than a baseball game, but Lewis-Clark St. (Idaho) finally solved the Azusa Pacific puzzle, pounded out 19 hits and used an 8-run sixth to drop the Cougars, 21-11, in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader to salvage a split.

The win is the first in 3 tries for the 2-time defending NAIA champion Warriors, as on the heels of a 13-10 win in yesterday's series opener, the Cougars took today's doubleheader opener 9-7.

With the split, the Cougars move to 24-14 with their 11th win in the past 15 games. The NAIA's No. 3-ranked Warriors move to 29-7 overall, suffering their first back-to-back losses of the season.

In the nightcap, the Cougars took a quick 4-1 lead with a pair of runs in the first on Glenn Hedgpeth's 13th home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the first, and a pair of RBI singles in the second by Stephen Vogt and Billy Gwinn.

The Cougars led 5-3 after 3 innings, but the Warriors came alive and roughed up starter Brandon Sisk with a 6-run fourth, keyed by 3 straight singles to open the frame, to take the lead for good, 9-5.

They added another run in the fifth before the Cougars made it 10-6 in the sixth on an RBI double by Vogt. The Warriors put the game away with an 8-run sixth getting a grand slam from Derek Bruce and a 2-run shot by Tyler Best to take an 18-6 lead.

Jake Haaker finished 4-for-5, and he got his lone RBIs on a 2-RBI single in the seventh as the Cougars cut into the deficit. Vogt, who finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch, and Cameron Radonich had an RBI groundout as the Cougars plated 5 runs in the inning to make it 18-11. But the Warriors added 3 more in their half of the seventh and the Cougars failed to score again.

Gwinn was 2-for-3, and Radonich was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Nick Mercado scored 3 runs and had a hit. Sisk suffered his second loss of the season after giving up 11 hits, 9 runs (6 earned) in 3.2 innings. The Cougar bullpen got roughed up, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) in 4.1 innings.

In the opener, starter Josh Grant was effective enough on the mound, and Vogt added 4 RBIs, and Robbie Lindsey had 4 hits as the Cougars stole a 9-7 win.

As they did in yesterday's game, the Cougars trailed. This time the Cougars were down 4-2 when they proceeded to score 6 runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. Jeff Staniland was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, and both Mercado and Coba Canales reached on fielding errors to load the bases with no outs as the Warriors misplayed back-to-back sacrifice bunt attempts.

Radonich followed with an RBI single to make it 4-3, and Vogt answered with a bases-clearing double to give the Cougars a 6-4 lead. Lindsey then singled to move Vogt to third, and balk by Warrior hurler Derek Landavazo scored him. Landavazo then struck out Hedgpeth and Joe Morrison before Ryan Marcos delivered his first hit of the series, an RBI-single that scored pinch-runner Chris Cardinale to give the Cougars an 8-4 lead.

Josh Celigoy, who earlier homered, hit a 2-run double as the Warriors made it 8-7 with a 3-run seventh. Brandon Morris plated Celigoy with a double of his own, but Grant forced Allen Balmer to ground out to Lindsey to end the threat and the Cougars escaped with their lead intact.

In the eighth, the Warriors twice put the tying run on base off reliever Daniel Sloan, but he used a double play and a huge strikeout of Jose Rodriguez to end the inning.

Jeff Staniland drew a bases loaded walk in the ninth for the final run. The Cougars had the bases loaded with 1 out when Mercado flew out to left field, but Warrior leftfielder Nicolas Benton gunned down Hedgpeth, who was attempting to score.

Sloan hit Best to lead off the ninth, but the freshmen forced Celigoy to pop out to Hedgpeth. Morris struck out before Best advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sloan induced Balmer into a game-ending flyout to Radonich in center.

Grant went 7 strong innings, scattering 11 hits. He gave up 7 runs, but only 4 were earned. He moves to 2-2 on the season. Sloan picked up his first career save in relief after tossing 2 scoreless innings.

Lindsey finished 4-for-5, and Vogt was 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs. Haaker and Radonich each had 2 hits apiece.

In 3 games vs. Lewis-Clark St., Vogt is 8-for-15 with 4 runs, 9 RBIs and 4 doubles all while extending his hitting streak to 20 games. In 3 games the teams have combined for 71 runs and 92 hits. The teams conclude their 4-game series Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
