Aloha to Perfection

Hawaii Pacific 6
Azusa Pacific 3

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- It is said that all good things must come to end at some point. Maybe not all good things, but for Azusa Pacific, one good thing came to an end Tuesday—its perfect record.

Leading 2-1 after doubles play, the NAIA’s No. 1-ranked Azusa Pacific managed to win just one singles match in falling to NCAA Division II No. 1-ranked Hawaii Pacific, 6-3, snapping the Cougars’ school-record 23-game winning streak and handing them their first loss of the season.

With the loss, the Cougars drop to 23-1 overall. Hawaii Pacific is now 20-0.

The Cougars got the early jump by winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Then in singles action, HPU’s Gabor Jaross tied the match at 2-2 with his quick (7-6, 6-0) win over David Goodman at No. 3. Sasa Pirc then defeated Tom Jelsma (2-6, 6-3, 6-0) at No. 6, and Christian Lindberg downed Gordon Hong (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) at No. 5 to give the Sea Warriors a 4-2 advantage.

Sam Fletcher made it 4-3 when he beat Mikael Maatta (6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3)) at No. 1, but Matey Pampulov and Moritz Szelzki each won in three sets at No. 2 and No. 4 to clinch the match. Pampulov handed Boris Bakalov his first loss of the season at No. 2.

“Hawaii Pacific played really well, and they deserved to win the match,” said Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren. “We could have won this match, but I think the home court just gave them that little edge they needed to win at the end. We will learn from this and take it as a lesson for the future. We now set our goals on winning the GSAC for the third straight year without losing a match.”

The Cougars have 2 GSAC matches left and can clinch their third straight conference crown Friday when they travel to San Diego to face No. 12 Point Loma Nazarene. They close out the GSAC season Saturday at No. 21 Westmont.
