Box Score 2 COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Glenn Hedgpeth's sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning lifted Azusa Pacific to a 2-1 extra inning win over Vanguard in the nightcap to complete the Cougars' sweep of a GSAC doubleheader.
Azusa Pacific also took the opener 5-3.
Jake Haaker led off the eighth with a walk. Cameron Radonich moved courtesy runner Scott Hodsdon to second with a groundout, and Stephen Vogt moved Hodsdon to third with a single to center. Vogt also advanced to second on the throw home, and the Cougars had runners at second and third with 1 out. Robbie Lindsey was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Hedgpeth followed with a sac fly to left to score Hodsdon with the eventual winning run.
Johnny Soberal, who entered in the fifth inning, retired the side in the bottom half of the eighth, getting the last 2 outs with his fifth and sixth strikeouts. Soberal, who allowed 3 hits in 3.2 scoreless innings, picked up the win in relief of Brad McKinney, who went 4.1 innings, allowing just 1 run.
The Cougars scored in the first after Radonich led off with a double. Vogt moved him to third with a groundout to first, and Lindsey drove him in with a groundout to second. However, the Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the first.
In the opener, Azusa Pacific scored 3 runs in the top of the eighth to erase a 3-2 deficit and steal a 5-3 win. Joe Morrison led off the inning by reaching on an error. Ryan Marcos sacrificed him to second, and pinch-hitter Billy Gwinn drove him in with a double. Nick Mercado then walked, and after Coba Canales reached on a fielder's choice, Radonich delivered a 2-RBI triple to give the Cougars the lead.
Jeremy Hess started and pitched a solid 6.1 innings before being lifted in favor of McKinney, who tossed the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win.
With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 12-7 overall, 3-5 GSAC. Vanguard drops to 5-11, 0-7.
