McKinney Masters Mustangs

Box Score

AZUSA, Calif. -- Brad McKinney threw 4 innings Saturday, so he was going to be closely watched tonight by Azusa Pacific head coach Paul Svagdis. But since he was dominating from the start, Svagdis had no choice but to stay with him.

Good choice.

McKinney tossed a complete-game, dazzling The Master's the entire night to lift Azusa Pacific to a crucial 7-1 GSAC win over the Mustangs.

"Our thought was that we were going to have to pitch by committee tonight," said Svagdis. "We were hoping he could give us 4 strong innings, then we could turn the game over to our pen, but he was feeling fine, he was warm and we just rode him all night."

With the win, which is the Cougars' third straight and eighth in their past 9 games, Azusa Pacific improve to 21-11 overall, 9-8 GSAC. The Master's falls to 16-13, 8-6.

In his best performance of the season, McKinney went the distance scattering 8 hits, 7 of them singles (3 of those were infield sigles) and allowing 1 run. However, what is even more impressive is that McKinney struck out a season-high 10 while allowing just a single walk in the ninth inning.

Offensively the Cougars continued to click. They jumped on the board in their first at-bat after Glenn Hedgpeth drove in Robbie Lindsey, who earlier doubled, with a single up the middle.

Stephen Vogt, who extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games with a 2-for-3 effort, led off the third with his fourth home run of the season. Two batters later, Hedgpeth smacked his team-leading ninth bomb of the year to put the Cougars up 3-0.

Mark Streelman was 3-for-3, and he completed the Cougars' 4-run third with a 2-RBI single that plated Joe Morrison and Cameron Radonich. The Cougars took a 6-1 lead with a Hedgpeth sacrifice fly in the fourth and left the rest up to McKinney.

The senior allowed just 5 runners to reach second and 3 to reach third as he moved to 7-2 on the season. After giving up his lone run in the fourth on a Tommy Barrington infield single, McKinney was near perfect the rest of the night, allowing just one more hit and a walk, both to Brett Jaime, who finished 3-for-3.

"He kept the ball down so well tonight," said Svagdis. "He had a different mindset and focus tonight. He's been doing things like this for us all year."

Ryan Marcos was 3-for-4 with a double. Lindsey and Hedgpeth both had 2 hits apiece. In all, the Cougars' 2-5 hitters were a combined 9-for-17 with 4 runs, 4 RBIs, 2 doubles and 2 home runs.
