Tadeo Dazzles Cougars

Box Score

AZUSA, Calif. -- Culver-Stockton (Mo.) starter Jose Tadeo dazzled Azusa Pacific for a complete 9 innings to lift the NAIA-member Wildcats to a 10-3 non-conference win over the Cougars.

The loss is the Cougars second straight and drops them 13-9 overall. Meanwhile, the Wildcats improve to 4-1 on their Spring Break trip through California and 10-9 overall.

Tadeo, a senior from Bellflower, Calif., scattered 9 hits, allowed 3 runs, struck out 12 and was never seriously threatened the entire night despite the fact that Azusa Pacific left 15 runners on base.

Culver-Stockton put the first 2 runners on in the second with a hit-by-pitch and walk. After a groundout, Casey Chavez followed with an RBI groundout, and Bobby Garcia followed that with a double to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats added a run in the third and then blew the game open in the fourth beginning with 3 straight hits to open the inning, including an RBI double by Chavez and an RBI single by Garcia to take a 5-0 lead. Then with 2 outs and the bases loaded, the Wildcats took advantage of a Cougar error that plated 2 runs, followed by an RBI single by Roger Acuna. By the time dust settled, Culver-Stockton led 8-0.

Cougar starter Josh Grant, making his first start of the season, went 3.2 innings giving up 8 hits and 8 runs (5 earned). Daniel Sloan and Ryan Marcos combined for the final 5.1 innings, each allowing a run.

Azusa Pacific scored its first run in the fourth after Nate Leiser drew a 1-out walk, and Jeff Staniland followed with a double. Tadeo then balked home Leiser.

After the Wildcats plated another run in the fifth on a Roy Spaulding RBI single, the Cougars made a little noise in the sixth with a pair of runs on RBI doubles by Staniland and Cameron Radonich. However, Tadeo struck out Stephen Vogt to end the threat.

Culver-Stockton took a 10-3 lead with a run in the seventh and loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth before Marcos got Justin Hernandez to fly out to left and Acuna, who had 3 hits, to ground into an inning-ending double play.

But the night belonged to Tadeo, who picked up his first win of the season. And as sparkling as Tadeo was on the mound, the Wildcat bats were just as effective. The Wildcats, who squeaked out a 2-1 11-inning win over Vanguard this afternoon, banged out 15 hits. Three different Wildcats had 3 hits.

Staniland and Vogt each had 2 hits for the Cougars.
