Box Score 2 AZUSA, Calif. -- Freshman Brandon Sisk tossed 6 scoreless innings to help Azusa Pacific get a 1-0 win in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader and salvage a split with neighboring Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in Azusa.
With the split, the Cougars move to 4-1 on the season, while the Broncos are now 3-2-1.
Cameron Radonich led off the game with a solo home run, his first of the season, and that proved to be all the Cougars needed. It was also their only hit of the game.
Sisk, a lefty from Elkhart, Texas, was nearly flawless as he scattered just 3 hits and was never really threatened in picking up his first collegiate victory. Cal Poly's Kenneth Galindo led off the second with a double down the left field line, and he later advanced to third before Sisk induced Chad Allen into an inning-ending groundout. Sisk didn't allow a Bronco past first the rest of the way.
Equally effective were the Bronco duo of Chris Sotro and John Lee. After allowing the leadoff homer to Radonich, Sotro settled down to retire 9 of the next 11 batters. Lee relieved him in the fourth and allowed just 3 walks in the final 3 innings. The Cougars did have the bases loaded with 1 out in the fifth, but Lee battled back to end the threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Broncos came alive in the seventh, putting the first 2 batters on base. But, after a failed sacrifice, closer Ryan Marcos ended the game by getting a pair of fly outs to record his second save of the season.
In the opener, Matt Lopez hit a 3-run shot with 2 outs in the eighth to lift the Broncos to a 5-3 win. The Cougars took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Marcos and appeared to have the momentum. However, a 2-out, pinch-hit single by Evan Barnhart kept the inning alive, and Lopez connected off Cougar reliever Scott Hodsdon for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Azusa Pacific struck first with 3 straight singles by Radonich, Nick Mercado and Robbie Lindsey to plate a run in the first. However, Bronco starter Taylor Wilding ended the 2-on, 1-out threat with a strikeout and groundout.
Cal Poly tied the game in the fourth on an RBI groundout, but an RBI double by Radonich gave the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. Again, Cal Poly tied the game, this time on a Texas-leaguer to center in the seventh. However, Guiles gave the Cougars their third lead of the game on the sacrifice fly.
Jeremy Hess pitched brilliantly for the Cougars, going 6.1 innings, scattering 6 hits and allowing 2 runs. He recorded 4 strikeouts and left with a 2-1 lead but got a no-decision. Bronco reliever Jeremy White tossed 3.2 innings of 3-hit, 1-run relief to pick up the win, and Sotro closed the door for the save.
Radonich, Mercado and Lindsey all finished 2-for-4 with Radonich and Lindsey each collecting RBIs. Radonich ended the day 3-for-5 with a double, home run and a pair of RBIs.
In all, the Cougars left 17 runners on base in the 2 games, including a whopping 11 in the opener. Their defense, however, was sparkling again. The Cougars turned 4 double plays in the opening game all of which were inning-ending.
