Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- It's only 3 games into the season, but so far Azusa Pacific is displaying a flair for the dramatic.
For the second time in the 3 games, the Cougars hit a game-winning home run in their final at-bat. This time, Glenn Hedgpeth did the honors with a 2-run towering blast in the bottom of the eighth to lift Azusa Pacific to a 6-5 non-conference win over visiting CSU Stanislaus.
The win moves the Cougars to a 3-0 for just the sixth time in the program's 39-year history. It is also their sixth win over the Warriors in as many games all-time. Meanwhile, the Warriors, who earlier in the day won at Claremont-Mudd, drop to 2-2.
After CSU Stanislaus retook a 5-4 lead in the seventh when pinch-runner Marc Duvall scored on a fielder's choice, the Cougars rallied in the eighth. Coba Canales grounded out to lead off, but Robbie Lindsey was hit by reliever Ben Beznoska to set up Hedgpeth's heroics. Hedgpeth, an NAIA All-American second team selection last year, left no doubt sending a 2-2 pitch well over the left field fence.
He finished 2-for-4 with a run and 3 RBIs and hit his third homer in as many games. Ryan Marcos finished 3-for-5 with a run.
Scott Hodsdon went 2 innings in relief, allowing just 1 run, to pick up the win. Marcos worked a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
Azusa Pacific took a 3-0 lead after its first 2 at-bats, then rode the arm of senior Brad McKinney, who retired the 15 of the first 17 batters he faced, including each of the first 10 in a row. However, Hector Alaniz got to McKinney with a 3-run blast in the top of the sixth to give the Warriors a 4-3 lead.
Derek Wohlers finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, and he led off the Cougars' half of the sixth with a single. Jake Haaker then walked, and Cameron Radonich sacrificed them over. Pinch-hitter Joe Morrison was then walked intentionally to load the bases and set up a force out before Robbie Lindsey's sacrifice fly drove in Wohlers with the tying run.
McKinney worked 6 innings, allowing just 4 hits but also 4 runs, 3 of them coming on one hit. He also had 5 strikeouts and no walks.
Azusa Pacific next hosts Cal Poly Pomona Saturday at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader on Cougar Field.
