Box Score 2 AZUSA, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene, ranked No. 23 in the NAIA Coaches' Preseason Top 25 poll, used a 4-run second inning in which they pounded out 7 hits to lift its way to a 5-1 win over Azusa Pacific to complete a sweep of the Cougars in a GSAC doubleheader.
The Sea Lions also took the opener with a come-from-behind 9-8 win.
Azusa Pacific, which has dropped 5 of its last 6, falls to 9-6, 1-4 GSAC. Point Loma Nazarene improves 14-3, 4-1.
In the nightcap, Jud Richards led off the Sea Lion second with a solo home run off Cougar starter Jeremy Hess. After Ralphie Marin lined out to Jeff Staniland in right, the Sea Lions pieced together 6 straight singles plating 3 more runs.
The Sea Lions added another run in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead before the Cougars got on the board in the fifth. Jake Haaker drew a 2-out walk, and Cameron Radonich drove in courtesy runner Chris Cardinale with a 2-out double off the left field wall.
The Cougars biggest threat came in the sixth. Trailing 5-1, Robbie Lindsey led off with a single before Glenn Hedgpeth grounded into a fielder's choice. Derek Wohlers and Ryan Marcos then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. At that point, Sea Lion reliever Tony Wright entered and struck out pinch-hitter Mark Streelman then forced Staniland into a fielder's choice groundout to end the threat.
Point Loma starter Chris Hill, making his first appearance since tossing a no-hitter 2 weeks ago, went 5.1 innings, scattering 7 hits and allowing just 1 run to pick up the win. Hess started a lasted just 2 innings for the Cougars, allowing 9 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) to drop to 1-2.
In the opener, the Sea Lions erased a 6-4 deficit with 5 runs in their final 2 at-bats, the big blow coming by way of Will Craig's 3-run blast in the eighth that gave the Sea Lions a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Point Loma carried a 9-6 lead into the ninth when pinch-hitter Billy Gwinn, Nick Mercado and Robbie Lindsey connected with consecutive singles to make it 9-7. Glenn Hedgpeth's RBI groundout brought the Cougars within 9-8. Stephen Vogt then check-swinged a single into right and suddenly the Cougars had the tying run on third and winning run on first with just 1 out. However, PLNU reliever Justin Marabeas struck out both Ryan Marcos and Nate Leiser to end the game.
Point Loma struck first with an unearned run in the fourth off Cougar starter Brad McKinney. The Cougars answered right back with a trio of runs in their half of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Sea Lions scored twice more to tie the game in the fifth before the Cougars took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Lindsey and a sacrifice fly by Hedgpeth.
The Sea Lions scored another run in the sixth before Jeff Staniland's sacrifice fly gave the Cougars a 6-4 lead.
Lindsey finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Staniland was 2-for-3. Hedgpeth finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and Vogt was 2-for-5.
McKinney went 5.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and recording 3 strikeouts but did not factor in the decision. Marcos, the Cougars' closer who entered in the eighth, suffered his first loss of the year after allowing 5 runs in 2 innings.
