Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- California Baptist erased a 4-run deficit with a 7-run sixth inning to run away with an 8-7 win in the opening game to jumpstart its way to a GSAC-opening doubleheader sweep of Azusa Pacific in Riverside.
The Lancers completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
With the sweep, Azusa Pacific falls to 8-4 overall. They also drop to 0-2 in the GSAC, just the second time in program history the Cougars started the GSAC with a pair of losses. California Baptist improves to 7-6, 2-0.
On the strength of a 3-run third, the Cougars opened up a 5-1 lead after 5+ innings. Robbie Lindsey's RBI double followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Glenn Hedgpeth and Robert Guiles pushed the Cougars out in front, 4-0, after their at-bat in the third.
Hedgpeth finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. He had an RBI triple in the first and added a solo home run in the eight.
With one out in the sixth, the Lancers got a 2-RBI double from Stephen Crouch. After and infield single and a walk loaded the bases, Cougar starter Brad McKinney was lifted. A bases loaded walk followed by a hit batsman tied the game at 5. The Lancers then had back-to-back bases loaded RBI singles, before the inning was capped with a sacrifice fly by 2-time All-GSAC Steve Ferreira as the Lancers took a 8-5 lead.
McKinney went 5.1 innings, allowing 5 earned runs and striking out 3. Jeff Staniland went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the seventh. Stephen Vogt and Ryan Marcos each finished with 2 hits.
In the nightcap, the Lancers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Nick Gor, and the proved to be the difference as Lancer starter Oscar Serrato was lights out. The transfer from junior college state power Riverside Community College went the distance allowing just 3 hits while striking out 10.
Cameron Radonich finished 2-for-4. He led off the game with a single. Hedgpeth followed with a single up the middle as the Cougars had 2 of their 3 hits in their first at-bat. Radonich added a double in the third for the Cougars' final hit of the game.
California Baptist added 2 more insurance runs in the fifth. Jon Chastine, who had a 1-out double, scored on Ryan Wigley's RBI single. Wigley later scored on a wild pitch.
Jeremy Hess also went the distance for the Cougars, allowing just 2 earned runs in 6 innings. He added 3 strikeouts but suffered his first defeat of the season.
