AZUSA, Calif. – In the past if Josh Dillon was on the court in the final 5 minutes then Azusa Pacific must have had the game well in hand. However, that was the past, and tonight was certainly a new moment in the sophomore guard's developing career.
Dillon, making his first-ever collegiate start, responded with a career-high 10 points, including 3 in the final 4 minutes to lead the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 74-70 victory at Cal State Stanislaus.
The Cougars led for the final 33 minutes of the game, but they could never shake the Warriors, who rallied from 10 down in the final 8 minutes to pull to within 1 at 63-62 following a pair of Kavin Young free throws. That's when the Cougar went to the unlikely hero in Dillon who drained a jumper to put Azusa Pacific back up by 3. Moments later he made a free throw to give the Cougars an insurmountable 70-65 margin with 24 seconds left in the game.
A year ago Dillon averaged just 7 minutes in the 16 games he played as a redshirt freshman. And even this year he was still somewhere lost deep on the bench as evidenced by his mere 6 minutes of play in the Cougars' most significant victory to date, a 5-point win over No. 12-ranked Lubbock Christian. In the past 2 weeks of practices, however, Dillon has begun to emerge as a viable source of contribution to the Cougars success. And he didn't disappoint in his first start, knocking down 3-of-5 shots, including a trey, to go along with 3 assists in a career-high 21 minutes.
Junior Lance Soderberg led all Cougars with 20 points on a sizzling 7-for-9 effort from the floor. Brice Prather added 13 points to go along with a team-high 9 rebounds. Stanislaus was paced by Young's game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Azusa Pacific took control of the game with an 11-0 run capped by a Jeff Bates 3-pointer that put the Cougars up 23-14 with 10:47 left in the first half. The Cougars pushed the lead into double-digits on several occasions, including an 11-point margin at 43-32 early in the season half.
With the loss, the Warriors fall to 1-2 while Azusa Pacific goes to 5-0 for the first time since 1997-98.
