SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.. – Azusa Pacific moved to 3-0 on the season with a wire-to-wire 74-66 nonconference victory over Bethany College, Monday evening.
Sophomore forward Lance Soderberg and senior guard Larry English led the Cougars in scoring with 15 points apiece while Spencer Foster collected a career-high 16 rebounds. Azusa Pacific led 37-28 at halftime and held a comfortable 19-point lead following a pair of English free throws that put the Cougars up 63-44 with 8 minutes left in the game.
Yet, behind Quentin Boston's game-high 25 points and Brian Waugh's 21, the Bruins went on a 17-1 run to pull to within 3 points 64-61 with 3 minutes left in the game. Azusa Pacific made its free throws down the stretch to keep Bethany at bay.
All 12 Cougars who played also scored. Sophomore guard Jeff Bates added 10 points. Azusa Pacific struggled from the 3-point arc, missing 19-of-25 from downtown. However, the Cougars made 24-of-38 free throws, a distinct advantage over Bethany's 14-for-24 clip from the line.
Azusa Pacific comes home for the first time this season when it hosts Cal State Los Angeles Saturday (Nov. 20) at 3 p.m. in the Felix Event Center.
