Eagles Ace Cougars

IRVINE, Calif. -- Raquel Ferreira had a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs to lift the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Concordia to a 3-1 (29-31, 30-20, 30-20, 30-16) Golden State Athletic Conference volleyball win over Azusa Pacific Saturday in Irvine.

With the win, Concordia improves to 19-2 overall, 10-2 GSAC and bounces back from a 5-game loss at California Baptist last Tuesday. The Cougars, meanwhile, have their mild 2-game win streak halted as they drop to 15-9, 6-6.

Chelsea Morgan led Azusa Pacific with 14 kills.

The Cougars actually jumped out to one of their best starts of the year. They took a 16-10 lead and continued to keep the Eagles at bay until taking a 28-23 lead. Concordia rallied with a 6-1 run to tie the game at 29-29 before a Maria Abaca kill and a Concordia hitting error closed the game for the Cougars.

However, thanks to a tactical adjustment, which triggered the rally, the Eagles stole the momentum and used it the rest of the way. Trailing in the opening game, Concordia subbed in jump servers Tina Peterson and Lindsey Sommer both of whom caused fits for the Cougars the rest of the night.

The Eagles finished with 11 aces. Sommers had 4 of them, including 3 in the fourth game.

The Cougars struggled to generate much offense after that as they hit -.094 (9-12-32) in the third game and .025 (9-8-40) in the fourth game.

Abaca and Jenny Brickner each finished with 11 kills for the Cougars. Colleen Walker had a match-high 13 digs. Brianne Huff added 12 digs. Courtney Fox and Abaca each had 11.
