AZUSA, Calif. -- Jenny Brickner had a match-high 19 kills and 10 blocks to lift Azusa Pacific to a 3-1 (30-27, 27-30, 30-25, 30-27) Golden State Athletic Conference win over visiting Hope International Tuesday night in Azusa.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 14-8 overall, 6-5 GSAC and snaps its 2-game losing skid. Hope International falls to 12-10, 3-8.
Brickner had just one kill in the opening game as the Cougars had to play catch-up. The Royals opened a 17-10 lead before the Cougars scored the next 6 points, aided by back-to-back kills by Colleen Walker, to get within 17-16. The Royals kept the Cougars at an arm's length until a Chelsea Morgan kill followed by a Royal attack error tied the game at 24-24. Walker followed up an error with kill, and another Royal attack error gave the Cougars the lead for good at 26-25.
Then Brickner got going and so did the Cougars. She had 6 kills on 8 attempts (no errors) in the second game, 4 kills in the third game and then closed out the match with 8 kills on 12 attempts (no errors) in the fourth and deciding game.
She finished the match with just 2 attack errors in 36 attempts, hitting at a .472 clip, improving on her already impressive hitting percentage, which ranks in the GSAC's top 5.
Morgan finished with 14 kills and 5 blocks. Walker added 13 kills, 29 digs and 5 blocks. Katrina Anker chipped in with 11 kills and 15 digs.
Neither team hit well as the Cougars finished at .139 (65-38-194), while Hope International hit at a .063 (45-33-190) clip. The Cougars out-dug the Royals, who are the GSAC's top digging team, 89-77.
