SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Current GSAC leader The Master's erupted for 8 runs in its final 2 at-bats to launch past Azusa Pacific, 16-8, in a crucial GSAC game Tuesday in Santa Clarita.
All day long, the Cougars had to play catch-up and were forced to chase the Mustangs. Aside from a brief 1-0 lead gained by Robbie Lindsey's third home run of the season in the second, the Cougars trailed for the majority of the contest.
For example, after Lindsey's shot off Mustang starter Jeremy Seuss gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the second, the Mustangs used a walk and 3 singles to plate 3 runs (1 unearned) in the second off Cougar starter Chad Clark. Tim Murphy then led off the third with a single and later scored on a Joel Ralston sacrifice fly to give the Mustangs a 4-1 lead after 3.
The Cougars, however, refused to give in and answered with 3 of their own in the fourth to tie the game, 4-4. Lindsey hit a 1-out double to right center, and Shaun Beutner reached on an error. Jake Haaker then drove both of them in with a double to left center, and Cameron Radonich drove Haaker in with a game-tying single.
Yet, again, Clark and Cougars couldn't hold the lead as the Mustangs used 2 hit batters and 3 singles to plate 4 more runs in the fourth to double-up the Cougars and take an 8-4 lead. And while the Cougars fought back to get within 8-7 with 2 in fifth on a Lindsey RBI-single and a Haaker sacrifice fly, and one in the sixth on a Matt Dzama RBI-single, they never caught the Mustangs again.
The Master's then roughed up Cougar relievers Joe Bitonti (4 runs in 2.2 innings) and Kelly Strickland (4 runs in 1.2 innings) in its final 2 at-bats to put the game away.
Clark, who was coming off back-to-back stellar outings, lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing 7 hits, 8 runs (7 earned) and 4 walks. Lindsey finished 3-for-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. Billy Gwinn was 3-for-5 with an RBI single in the eighth. Nick Mercado (2-for-5 with 2 runs) and Radonich (2-for-4, 1 RBI) each had 2 hits.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 18-16 overall, 13-10 GSAC. The Master's improves to 21-12, 13-6.
