Bad Case of the Splits

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --Taking a quick break from the conference slate, Azusa Pacific split a non-conference doubleheader at Cal State L.A.

The Golden Eagles took the opener, 7-5, and the Cougars came back to take the nightcap, 8-5, in a pair of 7 inning games, one of which was a make-up from a Feb. 12 rainout.

In the opener, CSULA used 3 straight doubles and an RBI groundout off Cougar reliever Mike Medlock to score 3 runs in the second and turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Cougars closed to within one run twice (4-3 in the third and 5-4 in the fifth) but could never get over the hump.

Billy Gwinn hit his fourth home run of the season with 2outs in the first to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. GSAC Player of the Week Andy Alstot started and gave up an unearned run in the first before coming out in favor of Medlock (4-3), who gave up 3 earned runs in his lone inning.

Nick Mercado finished 2-for-4, and his bases loaded, 2-out RBI single in the second gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead. However, the Golden Eagles escaped without further damage as the Cougars left the bases loaded.

Shaun Beutner was 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the fifth that made it 5-4, but again Cal State L.A. pushed the lead back to 3 (7-4) with a pair of runs off reliever Josh Breckley (3 runs, 5 hits, 3 innings) in its half of the fifth. In the sixth, Derek Wholers drove in Joe Billheimer with an RBI single to make it 7-5, and the Cougars had runners at second and third with one out, but Gwinn popped up to second and Matt Dzama struck out to end the threat.

In the nightcap, the Cougars opened up a 5-1 lead after 3 innings, and then rode the arm of Wholers for an 8-5 win. Wholers went 5 innings, allowing just 5 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 5 to get his first win of the season.

The Cougars plated 3 runs in their first at-bat, scoring all of them with 2 outs. Gwinn singled then advanced to third as Dzama reached and advanced to second on an error. Robbie Lindsey then lined a 2-RBI single to left, and he later scored on a RBI single to left center by Jake Haaker.

Dzama finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs and a pair of RBIs, including his eighth home run of the season, which came in the third inning after Gwinn reached on the Golden Eagles' second error of the game. His 2-run shot gave Azusa Pacific its 5-1 advantage.

After CSULA made it 5-2 with a run in the third, the Cougars scored twice more on Mercado's 2-RBI single to left that scored Cameron Radonich and Billheimer. Three Cougar relievers then tossed the final 2 innings, scattering 3 hits and allowing just 1 unearned run.

With the split, Azusa Pacific moves to 19-17 overall. Cal State L.A. is 18-18.
