Cougars Cross Corsairs

AZUSA, Calif. --Azusa Pacific pounded out 19 hits to key its way to a 13-5 non-conference win over NCAA Division III UMass-Dartmouth Friday afternoon in Azusa.

The win snaps the Cougars' 2-game losing streak and is their second straight win over an NCAA Division III foe. Azusa Pacific is now 9-10 on the season. It was the Corsairs' season-opener, and they fall to 0-1.

Jake Haaker was 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs, 3 of them coming on a 3-run homer, his second of the season, in the fourth that gave the Cougars the led for good, 4-1. He also had an RBI single in the sixth and scored 2 runs.

Chris Clark started for the first time in nearly a month, and despite working on a limited pitch count, he allowed just 1 hit and a walk in 3 innings and collected 3 strikeouts. Joe Bitonti relieved Clark in the fourth and picked up his first win of the season.

The Cougars blew the game open with a 6-run fifth, turning a 4-1 lead into a 10-1 advantage. Ryan Marcos, who had 4 hits on the day, and Billy Gwinn led off with back-to-back solo home runs. Traviss Hodge finished 4-for-5 and had a bases loaded, 2-RBI double in the fifth. Nick Mercado also had a 2-RBI double to finish up the Cougars' inning.

Every Cougar got into the action with at least 1 hit and all but 2 scored. Hodge and Mercdo both had 3 RBIs.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat off an RBI single by Matt Dzama, who reached base 4 times using 2 walks and a hit by pitch to get on. The Corsairs tied the game at 1-1, scoring a run on a wild pitch in the fourth before the Cougars erupted with 9 straight runs to take control.
