Eagles, Cougars Split

AZUSA, Calif. --Concordia's Alejandro Garcia belted a 3-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, and John Carreon worked out of a 1-out, bases loaded jam in the seventh to lift Concordia to a 7-6 victory in the nightcap and earning the Eagles a doubleheader split with Azusa Pacific.

The Cougars won the opener, 11-5.

Azusa Pacific had to battle back all game long and had just taken a 6-4 lead, scoring a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a double play groundout, in the bottom of the fifth. However, with one out in the sixth, Eddie Nelson and Brandon Cox hit back-to-back singles, setting the stage for Garcia's heroics to give Concordia its third and final lead of the contest.

Despite getting a runner in scoring position in the sixth, the Cougars failed to score. In the seventh, Robbie Lindsey led off with a walk and moved to second when Cameron Radonich drew a 1-out walk. Shaun Beutner reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Derek Wholers then lined out to Nick Scannavino at second, and Radonich was caught too far off the second base bag and was doubled up to end the game.

Nick Mercado finished 1-for-3 and gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the first. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Eagles scored 3 in the second off Cougar starter Mike Medlock, who lasted 5.1 innings, allowing all 7 runs. Andy Alstot worked the final 1.2 innings, giving up just 1 hit and keeping the Cougars within striking distance. Jake Haaker scored a pair of runs and hit a towering solo shot to lead off the fourth.

In the opener, the Cougars smacked a pair of 3-run bombs to key their way to 7 runs in their first at-bat. Billy Gwinn finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and drove in Nick Mercado with an RBI single. Two batters later Robbie Lindsey delivered his first home run of the season, a 3-run shot over the right field wall.

Later in the inning and after back-to-back singles by Cameron Radonich and Shaun Beutner, Derek Wholers belted his first home run of the season, a towering 3-run shot to right to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.

The rest was left to Brad McKinney (2-0), who went 8 innings, scattering 8 hits and allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 2. In his first start in 8 appearances this year, McKinney cruised through the majority of the game averting any serious threats.

He didn't allow a runner to second base until the sixth. And although that run came in to score, the Cougars put 2 more on the board in the sixth on back-to-back singles by Mercado and Ryan Marcos and back-to-back sacrifice flies by Gwinn and Matt Dzama to go up 10-1.

Beutner finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. Marcos finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run, and Mercado scored 2 runs.

With the split, Azusa Pacific is now 10-11 overall, 6-7 GSAC. Concordia moves to 11-16, 7-6.
