(POMONA, Calif.) -- Azusa Pacific won 2-of-3 doubles’ matches to take a 2-1 lead, then cruised in for a 5-2 win over NCAA Division II Sonoma State for third place at the Cal Poly Pomona Team Tournament.

Sam Fletcher and Adam Davidson won a tight match, 9-8 at No. 1 doubles, then Justin Green and Thomas Jelsma won, 8-4, at No. 2. to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. At No. 3, Gordon Hong and Cole Billings fell, 8-6, for Sonoma’s lone doubles’ point.

Then in singles’ play, the Cougars’ earned wins by Davidson at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1), Jelsma at No. 4 (6-1, 6-4) and Billings at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4). Sonoma State’s only single’s win came at No. 3. Both Fletcher at No. 1 and Green at No. 6 had their matches suspended after the Cougars won the necessary points to clinch the match.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 5-3 on the season.
