Carroll is All the Buzz

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Chris SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Chris Bond’s 12-foot fade-away jumper in the key with no time left on the clock lifted the NAIA’s No. 24-ranked Carroll College to a 73-72 upset of No. 4 Azusa Pacific during second-day action at Homestead Invitational on the campus of Westminster College.

Bond drained a game-high 29 points, including 21 in the second half when he made 10-of-12 shots, most of them similar to his game-winning fade away, to thwart a gallant Azusa Pacific comeback.

Down the entire game, the Cougars rallied from a 61-53 hole with less than 8 minutes left in the game to take its first lead since the early moments of the game on a Brett Michel lay-up that gave Azusa Pacific a 70-69 lead with 1:43 remaining in the game. The Cougars resumed the lead at 72-71 following a pair of Dennis Coutee free throws with 1:08 left, and when Carroll’s Ross Gustafson missed a short jumper in the key with 44 seconds to go, the Cougars found themselves in the driver’s seat.

However, following a 30-second timeout Azusa Pacific was unable to get a shot off and turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation with 10 seconds remaining. Carroll dribbled the full length of the court and set up the play for Bond’s game-winning jumper.

As hot as they were last night in making a school-record 19 3-pointers in a 41-point victory over Montana-Western, the Cougars were at the opposite end of the spectrum against Carroll, which applied constant perimeter defensive pressure the entire evening. The Cougars missed 9 of their first 10 3-point shots, but down the stretch they made 4-of-8, including 3 by Ryan Dillon to rally back into the game. Azusa Pacific trailed by as much as 12 in the first half and oftentimes was down by 11 in the second half.

Coutee led Azusa Pacific with 19 points in 19 minutes while Michel added 15 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Dillon scored all 11 of his points in the second half, while freshman Spencer Foster added 10 points

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-1 while Carroll improves to 3-1. Azusa Pacific closes out play in the Homestead Invitational, Saturday against tournament host Westminster College at 6 p.m. (MST).
