Azusa Pacific didn’t drop a single set in sweeping NCAA Division III La Verne for its first win of the 2003 campaign earlier today at Citrus College then followed up with a 6-1 road win at Claremont-Mudd, ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division III, in the afternoon.

Against La Verne, the Cougars began the day taking all 3 doubles’ matches. Sam Fletcher and Adam Davidson defeated Josh Horwitz and Chad Rodriguez, 8-4, to set the tone at No. 1. Boris Bakalov and Thomas Jelsma defeated Jason Cortez and Josh Martin, 8-2, at No. 2, and Cole Billings and Justin Green beat Alvarro Alvaraz and Jamse Mudrow, 8-0, at No. 3.

Fletcher won easily at No. 1, defeating Horwitz, 6-2, 6-2, then Billings, Green, Jon Wagner and Stan Azevedo each picked up their first collegiate single’s wins at 3-6 respectively. Davidson knocked off Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2

The Cougars took 2-of-3 doubles’ matches against Claremont-Mudd to earn the double’s point (NCAA rules). They then won 5-of-6 singles’ matches to get the 6-1 win. Fletcher was the key again, as he improved to 4-0 on the season and has yet to be tested.

“We played 3 matches in 24 hours and went 2-1, I’ll take it,” said Azusa Pacific head coach Mark Bohren. “They guys showed a lot of heart today in beating a solid ranked Division III team in Claremont. Both Bakalov and Jelsma played through a lot of pain today, but they got the job done.”

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 2-2 overall.
