Late Burst Lifts Crusaders

AZUSA, Calif. -- Usually when your starting pitcher fires 6 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 run, the outcome will be favorable.Ê Such was not the case Wednesday night.

Senior George Barnes handcuffed Point Loma Nazarene for 6 innings as Azusa Pacific took a 4-1 lead, but the Crusaders failed to go away, eventually touching up the Cougarsâ bullpen for 6 runs in the eighth inning and stealing a crushing 8-6 win from the NAIAâs No. 15-ranked Cougars in Azusa.

Barnes was masterful for most of the night, 3 times ending an inning with a strikeout, including the sixth when Barnes set down pinch-hitting David Savage with the bases loaded.Ê However, Barnes was lifted after the sixth, and sophomore Kelly Strickland retired the Crusaders in the seventh without giving up a run.

Strickland started the eighth and faced 2 batters, both of whom scored.Ê Senior B.J. Litchfield came on in relief of Strickland to finish the eighth, but not before allowing 3 hits and 4 runs (2 earned).Ê Two Cougar errors played a major part in the Crusader outburst as PLNU took a 7-4 lead.Ê The Crusaders added another run off Matt Canada in the ninth to take an 8-4 lead.

The Cougars answered with a pair of runs in the ninth, including one off of senior Collin Kyteâs third home run of the season.Ê The Cougars managed to get the tying run on second base with 2 outs, but failed to get him home.

Senior Eric Ordorica continued his hot bat, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead in the first inning following up back-to-back singles by Robbie Lindsey and Seth Johnson with his tenth home run of the season.Ê Junior Steven Hubbell then hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Cougars their 4-1 lead.

Each Cougar that started got at least one hit.Ê Kyte finished 2-for-4, but was the only Cougar to get more than one hit.

With the loss tonight, the Cougars fall to 17-11 overall, 10-4 GSAC.
