Cougars Strengthen GSAC Lead With Sweep

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – If Azusa Pacific head coach Tony Barbone was concerned that Wednesday's crushing 8-6 loss to Point Loma would have any ill effects on the Cougars today, he can now rest comfortably as the NAIA's No. 15-ranked Cougars quickly squelched any distress with an impressive and key GSAC doubleheader sweep of Cal Baptist in Riverside.

Senior left fielder Victor Ambruso (6-for-8) and sophomore shortstop Robbie Lindsey (6-for-9) combined to out hit the entire Lancer team, 12-11, to pace a Cougar offense that scored 22 runs on 30 hits in a 12-1 win in the opener and a 10-3 victory in the nightcap.

With the sweep combined with a sweep of Biola by The Master's College and a Concordia-Point Loma doubleheader split, the Cougars (12-4 GSAC) expand their lead over both the Eagles (12-7) and Crusaders (11-7).

In the first game, Azusa Pacific got its offense in gear with a 3-run second inning, and senior second baseman Eric Ordorica led off the third inning with his team-leading 11th home run, a solo shot to left field that sparked a 4-run inning to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead after 3 innings.

Cougar senior Matt Canada held the Lancers to just 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings of work to pick up his fourth victory of the season. Every Cougar starter collected at least 1 hit, led by 3-for-5 performances from Ambruso and Lindsey. Ordorica was 2-for-6 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

Azusa Pacific was first on the board in the second game, as Ambruso's third-inning 2-run double sparked a 3-run third for the Cougars. However, the Lancers cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth after Fernando Gomez lined a 1-out RBI double to left-center and Steve Ferreira scored on a passed ball. Ambruso then hit an RBI single to spark a 4-run sixth inning in which Ordorica and senior first baseman Mike Soto each hit back-to-back doubles and scored, giving the Cougars a 7-2 lead. Lindsey doubled in the sixth and seventh innings, leading Azusa Pacific to 3 more runs and the 10-3 win.

Ambruso and Lindsey again led the attack for Azusa Pacific, tallying 3 hits apiece, and Soto finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

Senior hurler Nick Padilla started and limited the Lancers to just 3 hits and 1 earned run in 3.1 innings.  Senior George Barnes cleaned up the final 2 outs in the fourth to pick up the win.

Azusa Pacific strengthens its grip on the GSAC lead with a 12-4 mark in conference play, 19-11 overall. Cal Baptist drops to 8-11 in GSAC, 15-16-2 overall.
