Cougars Back On Top of GSAC

AZUSA, Calif. – In no way have the last 6 years been disappointing by any stretch of the imagination.  Nevertheless, for a program that has won more Golden State Athletic Conference championships than any other team in conference history, 6 straight second place finishes can get a bit frustrating.

However, with 3 outs today, Azusa Pacific avenged each of the last 6 second-place finishes with its eighth GSAC championship and first since 1996.

Azusa Pacific came into today's doubleheader with Concordia with the knowledge that just one win would do the trick – it got 3.

Right out of the gate, B.J. Litchfield delivered 3 straight outs as the Cougars closed out an 11-8 win from a suspended game from March 16 with the Eagles to earn the GSAC title.  The game was suspended after the Cougars rallied for 9 runs in the top of the seventh and finished today before the regularly schedule doubleheader.

The Cougars also swept the Eagles in the scheduled doubleheader, needing 10 innings for a 3-2 win in the opener, then exploding for a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

Matt Canada pitched his third consecutive Saturday gem, lasting 8 innings and allowing just 5 hits and 2 runs.  Shaun Beutner drew a bases loaded walk to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the sixth.  It appeared as if the Cougars would be headed towards a 2-1 win until Canada allowed a leadoff triple in the ninth.  He was pulled in favor of Litchfield who allowed a measly sacrifice fly to tie the game.  Litchfield allowed no base runners in his 2 innings of work.

In the Cougars' half of the tenth, Beutner was the hero again, lining a 2-out bases loaded single to give the Cougars the 3-2 win.  Rocky Binkowski and Mike Soto each had a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, Victor Ambruso belted his first home run of the season to lead off the Cougars' half of the first, and the Cougars were off and running.  They took a 2-0 lead on Erick Ordorica's sacrifice fly in the same inning.

The rest was left up to Nick Padilla, who picked up his seventh win of the season.  Padilla went the distance, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run, while collecting 3 strikeouts.

The Cougars then bombarded the Eagles for 7 runs in their final 2 at-bats, highlighted by Ambruso's second bomb of the game.  Steven Hubbell and Ordorica each added 2 RBI doubles.  Ordorica, Ambruso, Robbie Lindsey and Collin Kyte each had 2 hits apiece for the Cougars.

With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 28-13 overall, 21-5 in the GSAC.  Concordia falls to 20-27, 9-18.  By virtue of winning the GSAC, the Cougars will host the NAIA Region II Playoffs May 7-10.
