Crusaders Sweep in Regular-Season Finale

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – It sure is a good thing that Azusa Pacific had its eighth GSAC championship already clinched. Point Loma Nazarene swept a rather meaningless doubleheader from the Cougars, 4-2 and 7-2, in the regular-season finale for both teams, putting a normally potent offense on the shelf.

The Cougars, one of the league's top offensive units, were limited to a combined 4 runs and 8 hits in the doubleheader. Despite the sweep, the Cougars will still hold the top seed in next week's NAIA Region II Playoffs in Azusa.  It is also the first time the Cougars were swept in a GSAC doubleheader or even dropped at least one game of a doubleheader since they dropped the GSAC-opening doubleheader to The Master's back in February.

The Cougars actually took leads in both of the 7-inning games, including a 1-0 lead in the opener when Robbie Lindsey drove in Alex Valadez, who earlier singled, with an RBI single in the third.  Two of the Cougars' 3 hits came in the third inning. However, the lead was short-lived as the Crusaders answered with a pair in their half of the third, then scored 2 more in the next 2 innings to take a 4-1 lead.

Matt Canada started on the mound, working 2 scoreless innings and getting one strikeout.  Sophomore Brad McKinney relieved Canada and gave up a pair of runs in his lone inning of work to suffer the loss.  Mike Soto collected the Cougars' other hit.

In the nightcap, Seth Johnson hit his fourth home run of the year, a 2 run shot, to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Starter Kelly Strickland went 3 solid innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run.  George Barnes relieved Strickland and pitched a scoreless fourth, but then the Crusaders battered him for 4 hits and 6 runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.  Barnes suffered the first defeat of his Azusa Pacific career.

Johnson, who also singled in the sixth, had 2 of the Cougars' 5 hits.  Eric Ordorica, Steven Hubbell and Soto had the other hits for the Cougars.

With the pair of losses, the Cougars fall to 28-15 overall, 21-7 in the GSAC but still win the GSAC by 3 games.  Point Loma, which sweeps the season-series from the Cougars improves to 32-16 overall, 18-10 GSAC.  The Cougars will host and be the top seed in next week's NAIA Region II Playoffs May 7-10.  All games will feature an inning-by-inning webcast on www.apu.edu/athletics.
