Sagehens Prove Their Worth

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 16 in the NAIA and one of the top hitting teams in the GSAC, was limited to just 6 hits by 5 Pomona-Pitzer pitchers in a 9-5 non conference loss to the Sagehens in Azusa.

The Cougars suffer their second straight defeat for the first time since February 16 when they dropped the first GSAC doubleheader of the season at The Master's College.

Pomona-Pitzer, ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III and the 2002 SCIAC champions, struck right away when Jase Turner belted a first inning grand slam off Cougar starter Mike Medlock.  The Sagehens plated another run in the second to take a 5-0 lead, before the Cougars answered with 5 runs on just 1 hit to tie the game in the bottom of the second.

Of the Cougars' 5 runs, just 1 of them was earned, as the Cougars struggled all night at the plate, striking out 9 times.

Sagehens took the lead for good in the third after a perfect hit-and-run play put runners on the corner with one out.  Ollie Morrison then executed a squeeze bunt, plating what would eventually be the game-winner.  The Sagehens added an insurance run in the sixth, then cushioned the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh.

Despite pitching 3.2 innings effectively (4 hits, 1 walk, 1 run and 2 strikeouts), sophomore Kelly Strickland suffered the defeat to fall to 1-3 on the year.

The Cougars had their chances, getting the leadoff man on base in each of the final 3 innings but were never able to get anything after that.

Eric Ordorica was the lone bright spot, getting half of the Cougars' hits in a 3-for-4 performance.  Rocky Binkowski, Robbie Lindsey and Alex Valadez each had singles for the Cougars.

With the loss, the Cougars are now 25-13 overall, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 32-5.
