Biola Stops The Cougars

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Biola did all it could to freeze Azusa Pacific's GSAC title hopes with an 8-7 win over the Cougars today in La Mirada, but Cal Baptist, the same team the Cougars swept the season series from this year, handed the Cougars no worse than a tie for their first GSAC championship since 1996 with a 14-6 win over Point Loma.

The loss snaps the NAIA's No. 15-ranked Cougars' 8-game win streak, the longest such streak of the season. However, the Cougars still lead second place Point Loma by 4 games in the win column, but the Crusaders have just 4 games remaining, and can do no better than tie the Cougars.

One more Cougar win, and they will keep their eight-ever GSAC title all to themselves.

Biola jumped to a early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run home run by Carl Galloway, but the Cougars cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth.

The Eagles led 4-2 in the fifth when Eric Ordorica hit his team-leading 12th home run of the season with one out to cut the deficit back to one (4-3).  However, Biola broke the game open with four in the sixth with the help of two Cougar errors sandwiched between a leadoff single by Andy Kroeker and a double by Phillip Ward to make the score 8-3.

The Cougars responded with three runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run by Rocky Binkowski, and then added another run in the ninth on Mike Soto's fifth home run of the season but failed to produce the tying run.

Soto, Ordorica, Shaun Beutner and Alex Valadez all had 2 hits apiece for the Cougars.  Andy Alstot suffered his second defeat of the season, lasting 3 innings and allowing 5 hits and 4 runs.

With the loss, the Cougars are now 25-12 overall, 18-5 in the GSAC Biola improves to 23-19-1 overall, 15-11 GSAC.
