Pitching Leads Cougars to Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific senior pitchers Matt Canada and Nick Padilla handcuffed Westmont all afternoon long, then got the necessary offensive support, lifting the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Cougars to a doubleheader sweep of the Warriors in Azusa.

Canada fired 8 innings, allowing just a lone fifth-inning single and striking out 7 to set the tone for the day as the Cougars took the opener, 13-0.  Padilla then followed that with a 5-inning, 3-hit, 2-strikeout performance to lift the Cougars to an 8-0 win in the nightcap.  Both pitchers improved to 5-2 on the year.

Right out of the gate, Azusa Pacific set the tone scoring 7 runs in its first at-bat of the day.  With 1 out and 2 on, Mike Soto hit a 2 RBI double, the first of 4 consecutive run-scoring hits for the Cougars.  Soto then led off the second inning with his fourth home run of the season to give the Cougars an 8-0 edge.  Canada did the rest, allowing just 4 Westmont base runners and none past second base the entire day.  Freshman Mike Medlock relieved Canada and struck out 2 of the 4 batters he faced in the ninth.

Rocky Binkowski added the exclamation point with his second grand slam and third home run of the season in the eighth inning.  Shaun Beutner finished 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a pair RBIs and 3 runs scored.  Soto, Binkowski and Robbie Lindsey each had 2 hits apiece.  Binkowski finished with 5 RBIs.  Soto added 4.

In the nightcap, Westmont finally broke through in the first inning with its lone run of the day on a botched pickoff attempt with runners at the corners.  However, the lead lasted for all of ½ an inning as the Cougars knotted things up at 1-1 in their half of the inning on an RBI double from Seth Johnson, who was just getting heated up.

The Cougars added 5 runs in the second inning, spearheaded by Johnson's 3-run home run, his second of the season.  Johnson wasn't finished, however, as he added his third home run of the year and second of the game, a solo shot, in the fourth inning to round out the Cougars scoring.

Padilla was nearly as effective as Canada, working 5 innings and striking out 2.  Brad McKinney worked the sixth, striking out 2, and B.J. Litchfield threw the seventh, striking out one.  Johnson finished 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs.  Steven Hubbell was 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the second.

With the sweep, the Cougars are now 22-11 overall, 15-4 in the GSAC and will host 4-time GSAC champion Biola Tuesday afternoon. Westmont falls to 6-28-1 overall, 4-18 GSAC.
